Frequently Asked Questions
Products
Can I return my piece?
Unfortunately, we do not offer returns at this time. Each Kayu Bali piece is one-of-one, fragile, and difficult to ship safely. Because of that, we encourage customers to reach out before purchasing with any questions. We're happy to share additional photos, dimensions, videos, or background details so you can feel confident before buying.
Where are these pieces from?
Our pieces are sourced from master wood carvers in Mas Carving Village, near Ubud, Bali. Mas has a long history of wood carving, apprenticeship, and hand craftsmanship. Many of these skills have been passed down over generations, but this kind of detailed handwork is slowly becoming less common. Kayu Bali exists to bring that living craft tradition into contemporary homes.
Are the stories behind the pieces real?
Yes. Many of the figures, characters, and symbols are drawn from Hindu epics, Balinese folklore, and local spiritual traditions. Bali is a Hindu island, often called the "Island of the Gods," and its art carries that sense of mythology, devotion, and mysticism. Each piece is both a physical object and a doorway into a larger story.
What kind of wood are the pieces made from?
The pieces are carved from local Balinese woods, most commonly suar, crocodile wood, mahogany, and/or teak. The specific wood may vary by piece, and we can provide more detail whenever it is available.
Will you have more pieces in the future?
Yes. We plan to continue sourcing more one-of-one pieces over time. If you are looking for a specific type of carving, figure, size, or style, please reach out. We may be able to source something especially for you on a future trip or through our artisan network.
Are these mass-produced?
No. These are not mass-produced decorative items. Each piece is individually sourced and carved by hand, which means natural variation, small imperfections, and visible signs of the maker are part of the beauty of the object.
Why are the pieces priced the way they are?
Pricing reflects the uniqueness of the piece, the labor and skill involved, sourcing from Bali, careful packing, and the cost of shipping fragile sculptural objects internationally. These are collectible, one-of-one works rather than factory-made décor.
How should I care for the wood?
Keep the piece indoors, away from prolonged direct sunlight, excess moisture, or extreme temperature swings. Dust gently with a soft dry cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners or soaking the wood.
Can I request more photos or details before buying?
Yes. We encourage it. Since each piece is unique and final sale, customers are welcome to contact us for more photos, videos, dimensions, or context before purchasing.
What if my piece arrives damaged?
While we do not accept returns, we take great care in packing and shipping. If a piece arrives damaged, please contact us right away with photos of the item and packaging so we can review the situation and work with you on next steps.
Can Kayu Bali source a custom or specific piece?
Potentially, yes. If a customer is drawn to a particular figure, story, size, or style, they can reach out and we'll let them know whether we may be able to source something similar in the future.
